Krispy Kreme
Completed and fully landscaped shot of the Krispy Kreme Manufacturing and Distribution plant in the Effingham Rail Park served by the EFRR and one of the main reasons for its location there. The plant was opened by K.K in April 2002 at a cost of $35 Million and closed in December 2007 when sold to Harlan Bakeries for $12 Million and in the previous financial quarter it had lost $27 Million. Mind you K.K were not adverse to some financial slight of hand as the original financing of the plant was using a somewhat dubious accounting method whereby the mortgage didnt appear on the Balance Sheet but the costs were claimable. They also scored Local and State Tax breaks for openning the plant and employing people. It all leaves a bit of an aftertaste to the prospect of being able to model a real rail served donut plant on a shortline railroad. The rail unloading facility building is the chocolate coloured one at the left of the K.K sign, with the two large doors serving the tail end of the two unloading tracks and the smaller roller door being for the truck run through curcuit. The inbound goods are stored in those partly obscured silos next to the tall part of the plant.
