Rail Park
Title:  Rail Park
Description:  Aerial photo of the EFRR served Rail Park near time of completion of the Krispy Kreme Manufacture and Distribution Plant, so the date is approximately April 2002, hence the reason I chose April Fool's Day as the date. The buildings within the yellow area denoting the Rail Park are from the right; TQW warehouse with run through track door visible, Bunge then later Hodgson Mill, pre expansion which will double it in size. Centre of the area is occupied by the Krispy Kreme plant with the rail and truck unloading building being the chocolate walled building on the left. You can just make out the sweep of the tracks back from the shed to the EFRR Main which is over to the right under the angled yellow line and parallel to the CSXT/CN Interchange track and siding. At some point in the future EFRR will install a switch behind K.K leading to two storage tracks running down parallel with Pike Avenue.

EFRR Aerial view from CN yard
Title:  EFRR Aerial view from CN yard
Description:  Visible is the rear of TQW showing track through building and loop track around building, Bunge Mill, later and now Hodgson Mill pre expansion , and Krispy Kreme facility with rail unloading building [chocolate colour with white roof] in upper centre of photo. Further back is the Mid-Illinois Concrete aggregate unloading and storage facility a major EFRR customer and outline of EFRR passing siding just before it. Also visible is the CN/IC to CSXT interchange track with passing siding, which is not shown on simple map. If you live near or can visit the EFRR then please take some more photos particularly of the buildings.

EFRR/CN Interchange Tracks
Title:  EFRR/CN Interchange Tracks
Description:  EFRR Interchange track after addition of two sidings, closest to power poles. This photo is taken facing North and I believe is on the North side of the Jaycee Ave Overpass. The track just to the right of the two buffer stops I believe runs under the overpass and then is what is shown in the other photo. The give away are the power poles in one photo and the corn field in the other. Note the contractors Case Front End Loader/Back-hoe. Just beyond the Back-hoe are the interchange switches and track leading to the EFRR and TQW, just where that clump of trees are to the right of the power poles with the thin slice of beige ballast showing. Also note the power poles with their unique High Voltage Supply arms and the red and white radio mast just to the left of third pole down from camera position. These features enable one to inter-relate photo locations in the area. If you live near or can visit the EFRR then please take some more photos particularly of the buildings.

Daily Interchanges with CSX and CN
Title:  Daily Interchanges with CSX and CN
Description:  EFRR 2716 in Phase 1 [Two Tone Red with parabolic curve to nose stripes] paint with IW 7570 in its original IW paint job [Phase 2 will be EFRR inspired] and previously unknown CN Loco #5629, posed outside TQW for website publicity photo. I had often looked at this photo and wondered where the location was and then tonight I realised the tell tale was the corner of the industrial building which has to be TQW warehouse. The track in the foreground of the photo are the tail end of the Hodgson Mill siding. The track with the CN loco on it leads straight in to and through the TQW warehouse. The track with EFRR 2716 and IW 7570 on it is the passing track which runs around the outside of TQW and prevents EFRR having a loading guage restriction point by only running through TQW. I am always on the lookout for more photos of the EFRR so if you live nearby or can visit then please contact EFRR to let them know your coming to arrange a permission slip/liability waiver and please contact me because I would appreciate copies of any photos. Update 11 September 2009. I just received a CD of photos and other information on the EFRR from a contact at Agracel and it shows similar photos to this one from what appears to have been a EFRR Open Day and so I was able to zoom in and find out the number of CN 5629 which must have been loaned to EFRR for the PR event.

2716
Title:  2716
Description:  I found this photo of EFRR 2716 on another website and the interesting thing is that it almost exactly matches another photo I found on a different website. MMMM I wonder what happened there. Anyway it is a great shot of EFRR 2716 in what I am describing as its Phase 2 paint job, whereby the stripes near the nose have been changed to curves from the previous parabolic shapes and Hi Viz safety stripes have been added to the frame sill to comply with Federal Regulations. I will have to find out when that came in to effect.

EFRR 2716 with IW 7570 outside TQW warehouse
Title:  EFRR 2716 with IW 7570 outside TQW warehouse
Description:  I found this photo on the same website I found the duplicate of EFRR 2716 in this Phase 2 paint job. Here we see EFRR 2716 in its current Phase 2 paint job while IW 7570 is in its original IW Phase 1 paint job so we have an interesting transition period shown here. In the future IW 7570 will be given a EFRR inspired paint job [Phase 2 Minus] and then sometime in the two months afterwards it will finally be lettered for Illinois Western again, so completing its Phase 2 paint job to match EFRR 2716.

EFRR 2716 at Start Up
Title:  EFRR 2716 at Start Up
Description:  I found this photo on the same website I found the duplicate of EFRR 2716 in its Phase 2 paint job. Here we see EFRR 2716 in its original Phase 1 EFRR paint job where the stripes form a parabolic curve downwards. Note the white caps to the twin exhaust stacks. Of Major interest is the track under #2716 which is that new that it hasnt been fully ballasted.

EFRR 2716 Dedication Ceremony
Title:  EFRR 2716 Dedication Ceremony
Description:  EFRR 2716 at EFRR Dedecation Ceremony 1999. I found this photo yesterday while researching the web for more information and photos of the now former Krispy Kreme manufacturing and distribution plant located on the EFRR at Effingham. It was contained in an article about the opening of the plant at Siteselection.com and was obviously used by the railroad as an early publicity photo. There is I believe an actual Krispy Kreme Opening Dedication photo as well showing #2716 with a banner on the side of the loco. I have only managed to capture a thumbnail of the photo. I also had my first Krispy Kreme donuts this week, bought from a BP servo in Sth Melbourne. $8.00 for 4 donuts, 2 choc and 2 original. Rip off and bloody tite arse with the choc coating, it was like it was painted on. As per usual if you live near or are visiting Effingham and you can take some photos of the EFRR and the buildings then please contact me. I would really like some photos of the rail side views of the various EFRR customers. Its not easy trying to research and model this railroad from Australia.

EFRR 2716 Two Tone Red with Hi-Viz Yellow
Title:  EFRR 2716 Two Tone Red with Hi-Viz Yellow
Description:  EFRR 2716. Note 2716 is wearing the two tone red scheme with Hi-Viz Yellow safety striping to frame sill and steps. Note that the yellow striping and I think also the yellow feathering behind the radiator have changed to a more rounded finish where previously they curved parabolically to the deck at an angle which almost matched the bracing running down to the bottom of the front steps. There is a similar shot of 2716 outside the TQW warehouse here on this site [search thru Effingham photos] which shows a similar view of 2716 wearing the first EFRR paint scheme of red with yellow stripes but no sill striping. This is the current EFRR scheme and serves as the basis for the paint job on IW 7570. Interestingly the author of this photo on the flickr photo website mentions [12 months ago] that he thinks EFRR is no longer running. Has someone forgotten to tell the folks at EFRR this? If you live local to the EFRR or are visiting and wish to take some photos then please contact EFRR to let them know when you are coming and to obtain a liability waiver/permission slip. You know Bad Apples, 9/11, etc, yada, yada, yada. Again if you do take some photos then please contact me.

IW 7570 on Hodgson Mill Siding
Title:  IW 7570 on Hodgson Mill Siding
Description:  Found this on another website, no idea which one. This photo shows the rail side of Hodgson Mill and I am not sure if IW 7570 is in Phase 2 Minus or full Phase 2 paint work. Good details of the back of the mill and also if you look between the two buildings you can see the aggregate pile at Mid-Illinois Concrete another EFRR customer.

EFRR Map
Title:  EFRR Map
Description:  This map from a switching puzzle website is what started me on my quest to learn more about the EFRR as it was described as the closest real life railroad to the TIMESAVER Switching Puzzle. I mean how many railroads, let alone a shortline can legitimately claim to have a doughnut factory [distribution facility] located on site and served by rail?? IW 7570 on Hodgson Mill Siding just near TQW
Title:  IW 7570 on Hodgson Mill Siding just near TQW
Description:  Not sure exactly which website I found this photo on but it is a nice shot of IW 7570 in what I am calling its Phase 1 paint job, which despite some signs of weathering sure looks one hell of a lot better than its previous Conrail paint job. Just how bad it looked when they found it on the dead line I hate to think but the crew from IW brought her back from the dead to live again and soon she will be painted in her EFRR inspired Phase 2 Minus paint job, then sometime in the following two months she will receive her Illinois Western lettering again, completing her Phase 2 paint job. If you look to the rear end of 7570 you will see a UP auto car which is on the CSXT/CN interchange tracks barely 100 feet away which the EFRR parallels.

IW 7570 on EFRR at TQW
Title:  IW 7570 on EFRR at TQW
Description:  Illinois Western GP10 #7570 seen on the EFRR Shortline, parked on the siding leading in to the Total Quality Warehouse [TQW owned by Agracel who also own IW and EFRR] unloading facility. Of interest are the unique spoting features provided by the air vent shields on the walls which enabled me to positively identify the TQW building when looking towards it from the CN yard and CN/EFRR interchange tracks. This photo was supplied to me by Charlie Barenfanger, CEO of the EFRR and IW after an email contact. Charles also provided me with details of the history of IW 7570. If you live near or can visit the EFRR then please take some more photos particularly of the buildings..

Krispy Kreme
Title:  Krispy Kreme
Description:  Completed and fully landscaped shot of the Krispy Kreme Manufacturing and Distribution plant in the Effingham Rail Park served by the EFRR and one of the main reasons for its location there. The plant was opened by K.K in April 2002 at a cost of $35 Million and closed in December 2007 when sold to Harlan Bakeries for $12 Million and in the previous financial quarter it had lost $27 Million. Mind you K.K were not adverse to some financial slight of hand as the original financing of the plant was using a somewhat dubious accounting method whereby the mortgage didnt appear on the Balance Sheet but the costs were claimable. They also scored Local and State Tax breaks for openning the plant and employing people. It all leaves a bit of an aftertaste to the prospect of being able to model a real rail served donut plant on a shortline railroad. The rail unloading facility building is the chocolate coloured one at the left of the K.K sign, with the two large doors serving the tail end of the two unloading tracks and the smaller roller door being for the truck run through curcuit. The inbound goods are stored in those partly obscured silos next to the tall part of the plant.

Krispy Kreme
Title:  Krispy Kreme
Description:  The photo sums up the whole reason for why Krispy Kreme built the manufacturing and distribution plant at Effingham on the EFRR. To produce lots and lots of these 50 pound bags of donut mix for distribution to Mid-Western and Western [via a California based distribution warehouse] Krispy Kreme stores. The actual numbers that the plant was capable of producing stagger the mind and would make a hell of a lot of donuts.

Krispy Kreme
Title:  Krispy Kreme
Description:  Chocolate coloured building at left has two run through rail tracks to the left just out of shot. You can see one of the bump posts. The building was used for unloading railcars and trucks of ingedients for piping in to those storage tanks. I am unsure if they also used the building to load boxcars with pallets of store shipments to the California distribution warehouse.

IW 7570
Title:  IW 7570
Description:  IW 7570 screen capture from recently updated Illinois Western website home page. The photo was taken on the EFRR tracks at Effingham, IL, where 7570 is based. Date is estimated. The clues are the unique powerline crossarms in the back ground and the jointed rails in the foreground and under 7570. 7570 is wearing its phase 2 paint job inspired by the phase 2 paint job on EFRR 2716. Note 7570 has snow plows to both front and rear which I think is very unusual.
